The sidebar is either located at the left of the right of your screen, depending on which default language your browser is set to. The sidebar includes three accordions, respectively ‘Search’, ‘Browse’ and ‘Text’. By default the sidebar is pin, you can unpin (i.e. close) the sidebar by clicking on the close icon. When unpin, by hovering the mouse over to the side of your screen will make the sidebar fly-out.
The ‘Search’ accordion is located in the sidebar and collapsed by default. Click it once or two times to respectively expand or collapse it. By default, two radio buttons are shown:
the default translation for the language selectedBy choosing ‘1. Arabic’ the word typed into the search-box will be searched for in the original Arabic al-Qur’an text. Selecting ‘2. the default translation for the language selected’ will perform a search in the given translation.
Note! As you change your selection of translation, so too does the number of radio buttons change to reflect which translation can be searched in. Remember to select the correct radio button when performing a search.
When you have (1) selected the text you want to search in, (2) typed in the word/sentence you wish to search and (3) clicked the search-icon or hit enter, your search will be performed and the main content area will change to the ‘Search Tab’. If the search resulted in one or more results you will be presented with all the results. From here on you have the possibility to select a given result and you will be taken back to the Page/Chapter view that you came from and your selected result is now highlighted.
Note! When you are browsing the ‘Search Tab’, other controls in the sidebar will be disabled and greyed out. Select a search result, change view to the ‘Page Tab’ or ‘Chapter Tab’ to enable all the controls again.
The ‘Browse’ accordion is located in the sidebar. Three options are available:
By clicking the button besides the label ‘1. Chapter’, you will be presented with an overview of all the 114 chapters (sura’s) that make up the Qur’an. One is selected by default (highlighted). To change the chapter, use the mouse and click to select another chapter.
Note! At the bottom of the fly-out, you are presented with three labels: Local, Transliteration and Arabic.‘Local’ renders the chapter-name in your local language, ‘Transliteration’ renders a Romanization of the Arabic chapter-name and last, ‘Arabic’ renders the text in its original Arabic writing. Changing between theses tab will not have any effect on the result – they are only provided as a feature to users with different preferences.
After a chapter has been selected, you also have the option to select a specific verse (aya). By clicking the dropdown-box besides the label ‘2. Verse’ you can select a verse. This option is particulary handy when you want to copy a specific verse to paste it as a link on another site. By default the first verse in the selected chapter/page is chosen.
Besides making use of ‘1+2. Chapter & Verse’, you are also presented with the option to select a specific page as numbered in the by now standard Qur’an print (book-format). By selecting the text-box besides the label ‘3. Page’ you can specify a page number in the range from 1 to 604. Additionally you can also go one page up or down by respectively clicking the buttons ‘-‘ and ‘+’.
Note! Typing a number that is outside the range of 1-604 in the text-box will make no change to the output.
The ‘Text’ accordion is located in the sidebar. By clicking the ‘Select translation(s)’ button you will be presented with an overview of all the translation (and transliteration) that are available. You can either search for a given translation in the windows filter-box or scroll down and mark the translation(s) of your choice.
Note! The filter-box provides a smart search-function that will filter for translation authors or translation languages, when given at least three letters.
Note! You can choose maximum five translation to be displayed at once. If you select the maximum number of translation and further try to mark another translation, your last changes will have no effect. You need to opt out one or more translation before selecting a new one.
In the ‘Text’ accordion you are also presented with the labels ‘Show translation’ and ‘Show Arabic’, where the last label also has associated a dropdown-menu. By default the ‘Show translation’ and ‘Show Arabic’ are both marked. By unmarking ‘Show Arabic’, only the selected translation(s) will be displayed in the main content area and the original Arabic al-Qur’an text will not be displayed. The same result are achieved by unmarking ‘Show Arabic’, however here it is the other way around.
Note! It is not possible to unmark both ‘Show translation’ and ‘Show Arabic’, as that would mean nothing will be shown.
The dropdown-menu associated with the ‘Show Arabic’ lets you choose which type of Qur’anic text you wish to display. Three major categories are to be selected from:
‘Uthmani’ script is an old-fashion script, named after the third Caliph Uthman. This renders the first standard Qur’anic manuscript. ‘Simple’ script, is the modern Arabic writing style which is currently in use and ‘Transliteration’ is the Romanization of the Arabic text. By default the ‘Uthmani’ script is selected that requires the embedded me_quran typeface (See FAQ – Font/Typeface).
Note! If you browser do not renders the Arabic text correct, you can choose the ‘Simple’ script. If you definitely wish to render the ‘Uthmani’ script, please update your browser or install the me_quran typeface. (See FAQ – Browser support).
